Summary
As a Manager, Payroll Operations, you’ll lead a team of specialists to deliver timely, accurate, and compliant payroll across multiple entities. You will develop scalable payroll processes, implement operational controls, and serve as a key partner to internal stakeholders and vendors.
Responsibilities
Lead and manage a payroll team, ensuring compliance and accuracy
Act as subject matter expert for payroll regulations and process inquiries
Establish and enforce operational procedures and internal controls
Monitor payroll performance data and implement improvements working cross functionally with product, engineering and internal teams
Monitor KPIs and lead initiatives to improve payroll performance
Participate in recruitment and onboarding of the rapidly scaling payroll team
Coordinate training and communication for payroll practices across teams
Maintain strong vendor and authority relationships for timely processing
Provide coaching and performance feedback to team members
Qualifications
5–7+ years of payroll operations experience, including team leadership
Strong knowledge of local and multi-country payroll regulations
Experience driving process improvement and using payroll systems
Experience working cross functionally
Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills
For Japan specifically, we're looking for someone with:
Native fluency in Japanese (written and verbal); English proficiency required for global collaboration
Deep expertise in Japanese payroll regulations: Labour Standards Act, Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, regional bonuses (summer/winter), year-end adjustments, social insurance contributions, and APPI data privacy compliance
Ability to build and nurture relationships with key customers and local partners across Japan's major business hubs
Serve as primary liaison with Japanese regulatory bodies, local partners, and government agencies
Lead SaaS platform localization including language expertise, tax calculations, and compliance reporting for the Japanese market
Implement talent development and people programs aligned with Japanese workplace culture and career expectations
Strong cultural awareness and ability to bridge Japanese and international business practices
Proven experience managing teams and leading operational transformations in Japan-based organizations
Experience with local ERP, HCM, or payroll systems commonly used in Japan (SAP, Oracle, or regional systems)

Our salary range reflects gross base salary. For commercial roles with commission eligibility, this figure represents On-Target Earnings (OTE), inclusive of base salary and target commission.
Salary ranges are quoted in USD as a consistent global reference. Your offer will be localized to your country's currency using a market-aligned conversion.
Final pay is based on objective, job-related criteria including experience, skills, and location.
